I can't help thinking of words like
"efficiency" or "engineering" when I think of
Germany because those words sum up today's Germany very well. Germany
has provided mankind with many great achievements throughout the
history. Today, the country is one of the world's economic
superpowers and boasts a well working system, and for the gearheads
like me, greatest car industry and un-speed-limited autobahns....
That's not the touristic view though.
The touristic view is as follows, a
huge country with borders from North Seas to Alps of Austria and
Switzerland, and from Poland to France... Germany has a nice quiet
relaxing coastal line, worth-seeing peaks and hills, endlessly large
forests, lovely rivers running through romantic valleys, and most
impressive of all, cherished heritage, archeology and old towns that
has witnessed many important eras of history and finally, modern
cities with vibrant nightlife.
This land was first occupied by
Germanic tribes at dark ages. Then came the Holy Roman Empire of
Germany which was one of the very few Europe-dominating superpower.
In the middle ages, Germany was divided into many different states
instead of a central governed empire, this status went on until The
Napoleonic wars of nineteenth century. After that, we very well know
what united Germany tried to do twice. So, again as from the
touristic view, each of German states, cities and towns reveal a
unique way instantly because of this historical un-unity. Each region
has different expressions of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque
architecture; there are many cathedrals, abbeys, palaces and
monuments in larger cities, old brick built farmhouses and medieval
castles, quaint little walled cities around the countryside as well
as archaeological ruin sites. If you are the heritage seeking tourer,
you will surely find what you are looking for, great diversity and
depth. Even modern architecture is in harmony with the old and
doesn't feel "out of place". This land is definitely not
obsessed with modernity. There are also a great number of museums and
art galleries to be found in larger cities like Berlin, Frankfurt or
Munich, as well as notable shopping opportunities.
Don't for a moment think that it is all
aimed at the mature audience. Young backpack travelers come here for
the famous underground clubs and dance parties of the metropolitans.
Interrail and youth hostels have created a new type of tourism and
this land must be the center of it.
Germany's nature should definitely not
be passed on. The north coast offers peace and quiet and with its
unique way, the famous Black forest is very well known for its
natura-touristic appeal. Down south, mountaineering opportunities and
ski resorts of Bavarian Alps are worth mentioning. Between both
regions, lies the central area and the world heritage site declared
Rhine River surrounded by many vineyards of top quality, called the
Romantic Wine Valleys. Wine festivals are held during the autumn
season offering a romantic atmosphere. If you are more of a beer
lover, the famous beer flowing festival of Oktoberfest is held in
Munich. And don't forget, they serve beer in 1 liter mugs here!
The cuisine is surprisingly varied.
Theme restaurants are mostly owned by non-Germans such as Turks and
Arabs. Other than that, tradition is "meat with and gravy,
potato and vegetables salad".
Germany displays both great modernity
and great heritage. Either path you choose for your travel will teach
you a lot. The wide variety of services offered here will make sure
you have a pleasurable stay too. Therefore at the center of Europe,
Germany is a very good location to discover.
