Washington D.C. is a purpose built city, planned from scratch to be the capital of the federal government of the United States of America. This planned city has developed excellently over the time.The main touristic attraction here is the area called "the National Mall". It is a two mile area between the Lincoln Memorial and the US Capitol Building. The White House is just north of the mid-point of these collection of parks. Some of the most important monuments and museums are in this area, so it's safe to say the National Mall is the heart of American heritage. The tall structure called the Washington Monument is in the middle of this complex and is indeed a very good spot to watch and orientate yourself to the area. The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial are the other important monuments. A collection of museums are also situated here, such as the National Gallery of Art, the Air and Space Museum, the National Natural History Museum, and many more; each well worth-visiting in order to explore the history and culture of America. Although tourists' main focus of interest have always been on the Mall, the city itself is quite pleasurable too. Downtown for example, houses many other museums, very nice restaurants, energetic business districts and the George Washington University. Trendy North Central District has quality live music and nightlife and shopping centers. The National Zoo and the National Cathedral are two of other recommended spots.

Washington D.C. is a lot different from other vacation spots. You won't find beaches or extravagant resorts here, people come to Washington D.C. to take a walking tour of this nations heritage. Especially for families, educational values of this city is unmatched.
