What the United Kingdom offers, is very
different from any other European Countries. The UK is unique in
every way. As we all know, UK is a an island situated northwest of
the European Continent. The UK is surrounded by Atlantic Ocean, North
Sea, Irish Sea and The English Channel which separates it from
France. In fact, UK is a "unitary state consisting of four
countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales."
There is a parliamentary system, and the worldly famous Queen. There
are some independent Isles too, like Isle of Man. Despite being
surrounded by seas, there is not much opportunity to sea&sun&sand
combination here because of the weather. It is known to be a bit
windy, mild and wet all year round. Although the land is further
north, the effect of the gulf stream (North Atlantic) affects the
temperatures which almost never drop below zero Celsius. In summers,
it may go up to 25 degrees Celsius. English rain is worldly- known.
It rains most days, mostly for brief periods of time. The streets are
wet most of the time. As we said, UK is unique in its every way. If
you're not a fan of rain, consider other options for your travel.
The history of UK is all about medieval
times and chivalry. You will spot castles and ancient ruins
everywhere! Most are kept in very good shape, some are still
inhibited by royal families. Edinburgh Castle for example, has been
inhibited for more than a millennium. Proud traditions still carry
on. Tourists are "advised" to be aware of this fact.
The thing to do in UK is definitely
sightseeing. Great examples of typical architecture still live on in
cities and towns. London city has been the capital for this land
since the time of Roman empire. The city is like an open air museum
except for the heavily congested traffic and modern life of course.
The Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, the Buckingham Palace, the
River Thames, Trafalgar Square are very well known. Outside London;
Stonehenge, Roman Baths, Warwick Castle, Leeds Castle, Canterbury
and Dover are some of the must-see locations. And lets not forget the
colonial times and near history, when UK was the empire that sun
never set on. In museums of such an empire's capital, you will surely
notice the best kept relics from all the colonized domains. Apart
from the cities, the rock formations of the Giant's Causeway, a
World Heritage site is too worth a visit.
The proud traditions carry on in
English cuisine too. Unfortunately, the Breton are not known to have
been keen on good food. They "eat just to survive". Most
local restaurants serve international food, quality depending on the
price of course. Since we mentioned prices, UK is not a cheap place
to visit. Not as expensive as Switzerland or Northern European
countries of course, but still above average. Fish and Chips and full
on English Breakfast with bacon and eggs is recommended. As for the
drinks, Pub culture is more important than liquor. Historical drinks
of this country, real ales are still served but lost the popularity
to beer.
Overall, UK is more suitable for
educated tourism, with best examples from the Medieval era. And if
you are looking to improve your English language skills on the way,
you should definitely not pass on the UK.
