Tunisia is a North African country. On the map, it looks like the land is trying to reach the tip of the boot, Italy.
This area has always taken the attention of great civilizations. Greeks of Carthage were based in this land and for a period of time, became the dominant Mediterranean power. Conquest of Tunisia by Romans brought the culture closer to Europe. Christianity was spread. Later periods saw a Vandal invasion and later, re-conquest by Byzantines. Around 8th century, the land went under Arab rule and prospered, especially by irrigation systems which took agricultural production to high levels. Later periods of history lists a few other Arab governments in these lands and finally, conquest by Ottoman Turks. During these periods, Tunisian lands were always fertile and thus, rich. All of these great civilizations left important marks, most of which survived to this day. Palaces, towers, places of worship, the old cities of Tunisia are full of monuments. After the World War I, this country too became a protectorate under French. During the second of the World Wars, fierce battles took place between allied and axis forces on this land. Later, Tunisia gained independence.
Tunisia attracts a lot of foreign tourism every year and the reason most people select Tunisia is for the excellent summer holiday opportunities. More than a thousand kilometers of Mediterranean coast supports golden beaches of different characteristics.
