Singapore is the East Asian Tiger on the tip of Malaysia, very close to the Equatorial line. Being so, the weather is mostly hot and humid; around 20-32 degrees Celsius, with no apparent seasons. Downpours are daily yet don't usually last more than an hour.
The history of today's society starts as a British trading post in the beginning of 1800s. Dutch had the South East Asian trade traffic under control back then and applied heavy taxes. In order to create a competition, Singapore was turned into a free tax zone by the British. This really turned the tide to Singapore's favor and the little port by the river thrived into one of the busiest ports of today. Currently, the location of the first settlements, the riverside is still the busiest location with many offices, skyscrapers, busy nightclubs, restaurants and hotels.
Singapore is very different than other Asian countries. For example, the first thing you'll notice will be the cleanliness of the city. That is because the independent government of today is rather strict and oppressive; even the littering laws are well enforced. This might sound like a prune to freedom, but don't forget that it also means you won't be robbed in the middle of the night or scammed by dishonest shopkeepers. Crime almost doesn't exist, this is one of the safest places in the world. The choice is yours...
Singapore formed a mix of cultures of its own. The dense population consists of three major races, Chinese, Malays, Indians and other foreigners, mostly from Europe. These cultures combined in a very authentic way and live in harmony. You will have the chance to explore all three deeply in one trip to Singapore. This is especially good news in cuisine which is one of the strongest points of Singapore. Influences of all three major races can be tested separately. There are many good quality western style restaurants and cuisine options too. The taxes of alcohol is surprising in this no-tax zone though. Nightlife in Singapore is very lively and there are very good quality bars and clubs. In this aspect, Singapore is well ahead of other Asian countries.
Best Singapore offers should be the shopping opportunities because of the reasonable prices provided by the lack of taxes. The Orchard Road, the center of the city, is home to miles and miles of shopping malls where you can find top quality merchandise. All kinds of electronics and computer hardware, hi-fi systems, antiques, high fashion clothing from the boutiques and fashion emporiums as well as casual clothing, sporting equipment, even books are widely available.
You won't be bored between the shopping and eating either. Considering the cramped size of the city, number of activities offered is surprising. Sentosa region is a separate island that developed into a resort and various attractions. Diving with sharks at the Underwater World or Night safari in Singapore Zoo where you can watch leopards, are both exhilarating experiences. You can waterski on the river or visit the Botanical Gardens, Timah Nature Reserve or the Bird Sanctuary. Opportunities for golfing, scuba diving shouldn't be missed. You'll hear the noises of monkeys in the tropical rainforests. One thing this city lacks is the good beaches because of the heavy naval traffic. Instead, you can enjoy the public pools. Singapore has the highest number and quality in public pools, they are cheap to enter and well maintained too.
Overall, Singapore has a distinct characteristic compared to the rest of South Asia, there is no danger to be had here, apart from breaking the law. Prices are still very good, that suit all budget and luxury needs of any tourist but overall, it is a bit more expensive than other Asian cities. Unique cultural experience, especially cuisine, is the sweet cherry that tops of this cake. Might look a bit sterile at times, but is never boring.
