Jamaica is an island country that sits
on one of the biggest islands in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.
What sets Jamaica apart from other Caribbean Islands is the distinct
African culture that was carried here through the course of history.
Being a Caribbean Island, of course
Jamaica has the fantastic beaches and waters. This island too was
settled by Spanish at first in the colonial era and later, captured
by the British. Huge numbers in slave labor were imported from Africa
to work on farms. But in here, runaway Africans sought shelter and
refuge in the Blue Mountains and continued their traditions from the
homelands. In later periods, these traditions evolved and shaped
today's Jamaican culture. Reggae is one of the most significant
results. Today, most of the populace is still of African origin while
the rest is various Europeans and Middle Easterners.
Jamaica is definitely the most colorful
community in the Caribbeans, the authentic music is the soul of the
land. Yet it doesn't stray too far from the typical Caribbean style,
exquisite beaches, spectacular sea and sun, tropical weather, top
quality resorts and facilities serving for every need of the tourist.
The cuisine, is a middle ground between African and Caribbean styles,
a little spicy, very local. When you'd like to try something away
from sunbathing, activities are plenty too; fishing, scuba diving,
wind surfing, jet skiing, swimming with dolphins, horse back rides,
backpacking, golfing, you name it...
During the colonial times, the native
flora was cleared to provide lumber for building purposes and to make
way for plantations and new species were introduced such as
sugarcane, bananas, and citrus trees. This derived the the native
flora a bit. Still you can spot the tropical jungles inlands,
covering the hills and peaks and reaching down to beaches. This
bio-diverse environment becomes a unique experience for hikers.
The cities of Jamaica are very good for
urban tourism too. Colonial architecture can be spotted. Some variety
in neon-lit nightlife is available. Other facilities from parks to
shopping areas are adequate too.
Enjoy world's best coffee in its
hometown, Jamaica, take advantage of the world class resorts and
facilities, feast on the excellent cuisine, what else would you need
on an exotic Caribbean holiday?
