Throughout the history from the times
of Pharaohs, to ancient Greek civilizations, Egypt has always been a
very important and desirable land. That is why in today's world,
Egypt doesn't need much description. The country is on the North of
Africa, and occupies the southeastern coasts of the Mediterranean
Sea.
The Pharoanic rule is the most
significant period of Egypt's history. Back then, this land was home
to the most developed culture of the world. It is evident that they
had major advances in astronomy, mathematics and physics, but as we
all know, the mystery of those times still haven't been fully
uncovered yet. If the idea of an ancient great civilization
fascinates you even a little, you have to see the archaeological
sites and the museums in Egypt; there are so many relics and
monuments of global importance to be seen. The pyramids, alone, are
enough reason to spend time here, and has always been. The great
pyramid of Giza is the only standing monument from the original list
of Herodotus' Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Times of the Pharaohs goes back to 4th
millennium B.C. In the dark ages though, Roman and Greek civilization
reached Egypt. Today's popular touristic destination, the city of
Alexander takes its name from Alexander the Great. At later periods,
Romans (Byzantine) reigned on this land until the rise of Islam and
Arab dynasties. The Ottoman conquest was in the16th century, until
the 20th century. All of these great civilizations left fascinating
monuments on these lands.
We can divide the geography, as well as
the climate into three zones. The first, the coasts of Mediterranean
and Red Sea. In both areas, the climate is fair in winter and hot in
summer. The beaches are available for tourism with many quality
resorts. Especially the region of Sharm el-Sheikh and Alexandria
attract quite a volume of tourism every year. Some of the best scuba
diving spots and other watersports opportunities shouldn't be passed.
The second zone is the Nile Delta. Nile brings with it great
blessings. The area's fertility placed it to the focus of many
nations throughout the history. Both the land of pyramids, Giza, and
the capital of Egypt, city of Cairo are on the shores of Nile. Cairo
is the largest and most developed city of this region and should be
explored. Be sure to check out Luxor aka Valley of the Kings too. A
cruise on The Nile is very peaceful and relaxing, with a great
authentic scenery flowing by.
The cities possess the Middle Eastern
charm and heritage. Hundreds and thousands of years old monuments
such as ancient temples or old mosques are being suffocated by
unplanned urban development, yet still possess an intriguing
atmosphere. In traditional bazaars, antiquities, local arts and
crafts expressing the combined culture that has been carried on to
this day are demonstrated. In these excellent shopping spots, you
will encounter many exotic items and have an unforgettable time. The
last zone to mention is the largest, the desert which lies from The
Nile, west into the Sahara. Nowadays, desert trekking is rising in
popularity, and if you are interested, some of the best destinations
are here.
The biggest influence of today's Egypt
is no doubt from the Islamic culture and that really shows in every
area of the daily life. The cuisine for example, is a mix of Turkish
and Arabic methods along with a good Mediterranean mix. Generally,
the cooking is not too spicy and well decorated with local produce,
herbs and vegetables. Lentil or chickpea specialties are very
popular. Dishes like stuffed vegetables and leaves are common. Fruits
like dates, figs, mangoes and melons are a bit on the exotic side.
The summer holiday locations like
resorts or hotels, standards are up to par with any other modern
country. Still, the costs are very affordable. Egypt always offers
marvelous vacation opportunities from culture based tourism to casual
summer tourism. And if what you really seek is a healthy mix of both,
Egypt is perfect.
